*Check with your pediatrician to make sure that your child is ready and healthy enough to start sleep coaching. Your child should be at least 18 weeks of age (age adjusted) and any possible underlying medical issues should be addressed prior to starting.
*Keep a sleep and feeding log. This will help you get a clearer picture of what is going on. And if you choose to work with a Certified Sleep Coach it will help give your coach a better idea of your current sleep situation.
*Implement a soothing bedtime routine for your child. The point of the bedtime routine is to help transition your baby/child from daytime to nighttime. The routine helps cue your baby/child's body that it is now time to sleep.
*Decide whether or not you want to continue using a pacifier (if applicable).
*If you are currently safely co-sleeping or room-sharing, decide whether or not you want to continue.
*Make sure all of your child's caregivers (mom, dad, grandparents, and/or babysitters) are on board with sleep coaching.
*Pick a realistic start date. It is best to start sleep coaching when you don't anticipate any major disruptions (travel, moving, birth of a new sibling, starting daycare).
