Did you know that when children spend a lot of time in front of a screen (TV, tablet, computer, etc.) it tends to lead to later bedtimes, longer sleep onset and less sleep overall? Furthermore, substantial use of tablets and other touchscreen devices among toddlers has been associated with cognitive delays and weight gain.
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends no screen time (excluding video chatting) for children under 18 months of age. For children 18 months to 2 years of age they suggest very limited, high-quality screen time with parent involvement to help guide your child through the experience. And for children 2 to 5 years old, screen time should be limited to 1 hour a day and again with parent involvement. If you have a baby, toddler or preschool aged child who isn't sleeping well, please do not hesitate to reach out to Tracie at Rest Well Baby ([email protected]) to learn more about the supportive sleep solutions that she offers. Sleep training or sleep coaching is the process of helping children learn how to self soothe to sleep. The process typically involves helping your child learn how to fall asleep at the beginning of the sleep period and fall back to sleep in the middle of the sleep period. There are a variety of sleep training approaches with some being more direct and others being more supportive. Both the direct and supportive methods can be very effective. In the end it's about finding the best approach for your family... an approach you can commit to and be consistent with. A Certified Pediatric Sleep Consultant can provide proven methods, educational information, support, and encouragement tailored to your family's particular situation to assist you on this journey.
