A bedtime routine is a predictable, soothing set of activities that you do with your baby/child every night before bed. The point of the bedtime routine is to help transition your baby/child from daytime to nighttime. The routine helps cue your baby/child's body that it is now time to sleep. You can start implementing a bedtime routine as early as 6 weeks of age. At first your routine will be fairly simple (ex: bath, nurse/bottle, swaddle, cuddle, crib), but as your child gets older his/her routine may take a little longer, as he/she needs more time to unwind from the day. You also may start incorporating books and a few other rituals into your routine as well. However, I strongly suggest keeping your child's bedtime routine confined to his/her bedroom (and not all over the house) and keeping it fairly simple. Bear in mind, if it is too complicated, then grandparents or babysitters might not be able to help assist putting your baby/child to bed should you want/need their help. Remember, just like we (adults) need some time to unwind at the end of the day before we go to bed, so do babies/children. Wishing you a restful night's sleep!
