1. NAP SCHEDULE: Children who nap at different times and in different places every day typically do not sleep as well. Babies and toddlers truly do thrive with a predictable routine. Having a flexible, but consistent daily schedule (when your child will eat & sleep) is very helpful. Your child will also sleep better at home around the same time(s) each day versus on the go.
2. SLEEP FRIENDLY ENVIRONMENT: We all sleep better in a quiet, dark and comfortable space. Your child will sleep best in his/her crib or bed in a quiet room (white noise machines are okay) with room darkening shades.
3. TIMING OF SLEEP: Children that are overtired do not sleep as well. Making sure that your child is getting the right amount of sleep (at the right time) is super important. While a 6 month old typically needs 3 naps a day, a 2 year old only naps once. Making sure you know what your child's sleep needs are can help ensure your little one is sleeping better.
4. SLEEP ASSOCIATIONS: Nursing, rocking and holding your baby are all wonderful things, but if your baby needs to nurse, be rocked, or held to sleep then he/she doesn't know how to fall asleep on his/her own. And if your little one cannot fall asleep on his/her own at the start of nap time, then he/she will not be able to put him/herself back to sleep should he/she wake in between sleep cycles.
