Developmental milestones and how they impact children:

1/5/2016

Developmental milestones can be motor, cognitive or emotional. Some of the more common milestones include rolling over, sitting up, crawling, separation anxiety, standing, walking, language bursts and potty training. Milestones frequently affect sleep, but can also impact social, emotional and feeding as well. Parents will often report a sudden regression in sleeping or eating right before a new milestone takes place (for example: right before a child takes his/her first steps). For children, these milestones can be exciting, frustrating and/or cause new awareness that was not there before. During these developmental milestones children may be trying to master a new skill or need extra cuddle time with mom/dad, which then impacts normal routines, particularly sleep. While it can be hard to know when your child is about to reach a developmental milestone, it's best to stay flexible but consistent with your child's schedule. Also, making sure your child has plently of time to work on his/her new skill during the day is important. If you stay the course your child should adjust fairly quickly.
