If your sleep crutch is no longer working and/or you have decided that you would like to teach your child how to fall asleep independently (a lifelong skill), one thing that I recommend is putting your child to bed in what is known as a drowsy, but awake state. So what does drowsy, but awake mean? Drowsy, but awake means that your child is warm, dry, fed, loved and sleepy, but awake enough to learn how to fall asleep on his/her own. On a scale of 1-10 with 1 being wide awake and 10 being sound asleep, you should be putting your child into his/her crib around a 6/7. If your little one falls asleep right away then he/she is too drowsy and you might want to move bedtime a little bit earlier.
